How can we help?

Classify products in bulk

This guide helps you classify multiple products at once using AI-powered suggestions in Tax Determination.

Note: Learn about how AI product classification works.

Upload your product details

  1. In Tax Determination, click Products on the menu.
  2. Click Upload CSV.
    The Upload CSV dialog opens.
  3. Click Download template.
product_code_classification-template.csv is downloaded to your computer.
  4. Open product_code_classification-template.csv and enter your product details.
    Product Code/SKU

Enter a unique identifier for each product, such as a SKU or material number. Only letters, numbers, and hyphens are allowed. Maximum 40 characters.

    Example: SC72275

Important: Underscores and other special characters will cause a validation error. Remove any unsupported characters before uploading your file.
    Product Description

Describe the product in at least five words. Maximum 210 characters.

    Examples:

    • Carbonated sugar-sweetened cola beverage, 12 oz can

    • Men's waterproof insulated winter parka jacket

    • Electrical wiring installation in existing commercial building

    Product or Service

Enter Product or Service to indicate whether this item is a physical product or a service.

    Category

Enter the category that best describes the product. Must be between 2 and 100 characters.

    Example: Maintenance contracts

    Additional Information (optional)

Enter a URL or other product details to provide more context. Maximum 4000 characters.

  5. Save your changes to the file, then return to Tax Determination.
  6. Choose how Tax Determination handles the products in the file that have already been classified:
    • To replace existing products with values from the uploaded file, select Overwrite existing.
    • To keep the existing products and skip the uploaded products, leave Overwrite existing unchecked.
  7. Drag and drop the updated CSV file into the upload area or click Browse and select the CSV file from your computer.
Tax Determination validates your file. If validation fails, an error summary lists the issues you need to fix. Correct the errors in your file and upload it again.

After the file passes validation, classification begins automatically. A banner on the Products page confirms that classification is in progress. While Tax Determination is classifying your products, you can't upload another file.

After Tax Determination finishes classifying your products, you will receive an email with the result:

Completed

All products in the file were successfully classified. The products are listed in the Classification suggestions table.

Completed with some errors

Some products could not be classified. Download the error report CSV attached to the email and review the errors, then upload a corrected file.

Failed

Tax Determination could not process your file. Try uploading your file again. If the problem continues, contact support.

Review the classified products in the Classification suggestions table and map them to product tax codes.

Map multiple products to product tax codes

Use bulk mapping to map several classified products to their top-suggested product tax code in a single action.

  1. In the Classification suggestions table, select the checkboxes next to the products you want to map.
A toolbar is displayed with the number of selected products and the available bulk actions.
    Important:

Before mapping, review the top suggestion for each selected product in the Classification suggestions table to confirm it's accurate.

  2. Click the Map all icon.
  3. In the confirmation dialog, review the number of items to be mapped, then click Map.

A results summary is displayed:

  • Products that were successfully mapped are listed by their product codes.

  • Products that could not be mapped are grouped by error type. For example, a product might not be mapped if it's already mapped to a product tax code.

Click Close to dismiss the results or click Edit mapped items to go to the Good/Service Codes page and review the mappings.
